Largest city and capital of the Highlands, Inverness is on the north east coast where the river Ness meets the Moray Firth. In the old town the impressive castle sits on the river bank where there are pleasant walks, or visit the Old High Church, St Andrews Cathedral and the attractive indoor Victorian market selling food and crafts. The museum traces local Highland history.
Inverness sits at the head of Loch Ness, a very long and narrow loch which is the deepest and largest in Scotland. It is also the most famous for what lies within! The scenery is dramatic with steeply wooded hills and towering mountains framing the lake and the romantic ruins of royal Urquhart castle sit on the shore-line looking over the beautiful calm water.
