Enjoy your free day exploring this compact UNESCO World Heritage city with its winding cobbled streets full of independent shops and the spectacular Close containing the Cathedral and the Castle. Towering over the skyline, the Cathedral dominates the city of Durham and is the largest and finest example of Norman architecture in England whilst the castle is the oldest building in Durham and is now part of the University. Down in the town admire the Georgian architecture and market square with its fine Town Hall and Church or visit beautiful Crook Hall and Gardens close by our hotel.
In the evening we go to Bishop Auckland to see the Queen’s award-winning spectacular of Kynren – An Epic Tale of England. This unique outdoor live-action show follows an epic journey through 2,000 years of England’s history, starting with the mighty Queen Boudicca battling the Romans, through William the Conqueror’s coronation, to Shakespeare and Queen Elizabeth I and the Industrial Revolution of Queen Victoria. It finally bringing us right up to date with both World Wars and Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation and is performed by over 1,000 actors. The sets, special effects and fireworks are spectacular and this world-class performance is not to be missed!
