Destination Coach Holiday Highlights and Itinerary
Metz, France (Tuesday)
Early departure for Calais and ferry crossing to Calais. Our journey then continues through Picardy and the Champagne region towards the city of Metz for overnight bed & breakfast in our hotel. Nicknamed ‘The Green City’, Metz is known for its beautiful open grounds and parks, as well as the largest pedestrian city centre in Europe. It’s wealth of history spans 3000 years, with influences that include the Celts, Romans, Merovingian rule, annexation into Germany on two occasions, the French Revolution, the Industrial Revolution and of course the two World Wars. The historical architecture is stunning, being largely constructed from Jaumont limestone mined from the Moselle region. The limestone features a golden yellow hue which is the result of iron oxide content. When the sun shines, the city takes on a particularly warm glow!
To Lake Geneva (Wednesday)
Continue through France, viewing the spire of Strasbourg cathedral (a wonderful sandstone gothic building, more than 1000 years old) as we pass by the city. Strasbourg is the capital of the Grand Est Region, and is the seat of the European Parliament and combines the best of old and new. Medieval half timbered buildings, cafes line cosmopolitan and pedestrian streets, combining the best of its French and German heritage. Our journey continues through Switzerland to travel around Lake Geneva and back into France to arrive at our hotel in Évian-les-Bains for our 5 night stay.
Évian Les Bains
A charming and up-market holiday resort and spa situated on the shore of Lake Geneva, which epitomises the belle epoque, a period in French history spanning the years between 1871 and 1914. This was a time of peace, prosperity, optimism, as well as cultural, scientific and social innovation, and Evian Les Bains today strongly reflects that heritage. This lovely town is the home of Évian mineral water and the largest themed casino in Europe. From golf courses, to sailing and lakeside promenades, and narrow pedestrian streets and terraces, there is plenty to explore and enjoy.
Lausanne & Montreux
Built on the north side of Lake Geneva, with a backdrop of the Alps and overlooking the Lake, Lausanne and Montreux are linked by pathways through the UNESCO listed (World Heritage Site) Lavaux vineyard terraces.
Lausanne sits atop three hills, surrounded by vineyards and sprawling down the hillsides to Lake Geneva. It is the second largest city on Lake Geneva, and yet it manages to combine the atmosphere of a holiday resort with its role as a vibrant cultural centre. The medieval Old Town is largely pedestrianised, and is the perfect setting for the gothic cathedral. In addition Lausanne is the Olympic Capital, being the home of the Olympic Museum.
By contrast, Montreux is a traditional lakeside resort town. It is well known for its mild microclimate, being called the capital of the Vaud Riviera. The Montreux Quays are the perfect place to admire the work of the city gardners, with a huge variety of exotic flora, including special plant sculptures that are a key feature of the city.
Chamonix Mont Blanc
A world renowned ski resort set in the shadow of Mont Blanc’s magnificent snow-capped peak, Chamonix is a charming alpine town filled with inns and historic churches. Soak up the pristine alpine air, the stunning scenery, the sound of mountain streams, combined with cozy chalet restaurants serving delicious authentic Savoy cuisine, and suddenly you have the perfect prescription for complete relaxation.
Beautiful Lake Annecy
The third largest lake in France and the cleanest one in Europe, Lake Annecy is fed by mountain streams, and a natural underground source. On it’s shores and surrounding hills there is a medieval old town, a 13th century Chateau and a popular beach. In addition there are walking trails around the shore, and pleasure boats on the water.
We say goodbye to Evian this morning, travelling back through Switzerland. We pass the city of Bern crossing back into France at Basel then drive through the Alsace region to arrive at our hotel in Forbach for dinner and overnight.
Homeward Bound (Tuesday)
After breakfast we make our way back to Calais for the late afternoon ferry to Dover. Continue homewards, arriving back mid-evening.
HOTEL LA VERNIAZ, EVIAN
