Today we drive north through river valleys to the historic market town of Welshpool in the heart of the Mid Wales Marches teeming with Georgian buildings. On the edge of town you will find the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway and the Old Station Shop and Café. The Montgomery canal is very pretty and offers the opportunity of spotting wildlife, or you might be interested to visit the Powysland Museum, home to local artefacts and customs.
After time to explore Welshpool we make our way to the gem in the areas crown, Powis Castle, a striking fortified stately home with the finest historic gardens in Wales.
The castle is the ancestral home of the Earl of Powys and looks over lovely terraced gardens and herbaceous borders. It is famous also for the treasures brought back here by Robert Clive from India and the Far East, which are displayed in the Clive Museum, making it the richest in Wales.
There is a choice of refreshments and shops to browse, all making for a fabulous destination to explore.
