This morning to the fashionable spa town of Bad Ischl, set against the backdrop of the Katrin mountain. Here you will find the historic Kaiser Villa, once the treasured summer residence of the Austrian Royalty and described as ‘Heaven on Earth’ by Emperor Franz Joseph himself. It was also the place where several historic meetings of world leaders took place.
You might like to visit the magnificent Kaiser Villa, or simply spend time exploring the delightful shops and weekly market full of fresh smelling bread and country products with many locals wearing traditional costumes. And no visit to Bad Ischl is complete without enjoying coffee and cake at the wonderful Zauner Konditorei with its infamous cakes, pastries, deserts and specialities.
We then continue to the picturesque Halstatt, one of the most exquisite villages in Austria and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its 16th C Alpine houses and alleyways cling to the lakeside and are home to cafes and shops. A funicular railway also connects to the Salzwelten, an ancient salt mine with a subterranean salt lake. By lift you can also reach the amazing Skywalk viewing platform, giving stunning views over the lake.
