This morning we drive to Glenridding on Ullswater with Helvellyn towering in the background. Here we board the Ullswater pleasure steamer across the length of England’s most beautiful lake to Pooley Bridge, admiring the expansive vistas of Lakeland’s highest mountains.
Then we make our way to nearby Dalemain House and gardens. The beautiful stately home is set in a landscape of rolling parkland, with beautiful gardens and peaceful woodland walks. The family still live in the house and there are interesting collections of furniture, portraits, ceramics and old toys. Tea room and courtyard café for lunch. Shop selling locally produced marmalades. Afterwards we visit Penrith with its Castle, museum of Roman artefacts and independent shops and cafes.
